“White” lady’s death at Port Adelaide
The rotunda floor in the Joyce Snadden reserve was covered in vomit as 62-year-old Emily took her last gasps of air. She complained of pain in her stomach. This was ten days ago. The better than average Samaritan had called for an ambulance that hadn’t arrived. Emily had called too many ambulances in the past. She was the woman who moved about Port Adelaide with the Aboriginals while scraping a chair along the ground. It was support and a place to rest. The government eventually gave her a wheelchair that increased her mobility. She allegedly came from a farming family at Naracoorte and married into the Aboriginal culture. The black fellas camping out said she’d drink all their alcohol then catch an ambulance home. Hence, no ambulance this time. Her breathing became more difficult then she took a last gasp as her eyes disappeared into her head. The ambulance arrived to pronounce her dead. This was one hour and forty-five minutes after the callout. The rotunda was cleared of camping debris and Emily’s vomit and users the next day had no idea someone had died there the previous evening. It is now reoccupied by homeless people. Medical staff reportedly said Emily died from a tumour in her stomach that burst. 25 May 2022 Orange Sky refitted van breaks down
Orange Sky Laundry volunteers at the Para Vista shift at the Lutheran Church last night took clients’ laundry to a commercial laundromat when the new-fangled heat pump clothing driers failed to perform as needed. Orange Sky has replaced the diesel generator in the Peggy van with heat-pump driers operated by lithium batteries stored underneath the passenger seat. They are recharged by the van alternator, solar panels on the roof and from mains power when necessary. Meanwhile, an Orange Sky staff member in Brisbane said the Sandy van with the failed generator has been returned to Brisbane for refurbishment. Volunteers managed to finish the laundry orders just as clients from the Lutheran Good Shepherd were leaving after an excellent free community supper. Kingsley stopped and glared at us from higher on the hill. We’d heard an old Aboriginal woman coughing her guts out and laughed nervously and watched. Kingsley knocked out a tooth of a respected neo-Nazi in the homeless scene, which was a foolhardy act except that the neo-Nazis have bigger objectives such as housing for Australians born in Australia and have English as their first language. Beck, 75, talked to us near the fence and suffered our mocking with good humour. She’s such a performer, but deep down makes astute observations. A man said he didn’t think he’d last the year as everything is going wrong with his body including pain and blood clots. Victory Church are getting bigger crowds due to the positive attitudes of church volunteers, nicely cooked food and generally non-violent clients. The noise from the road is incredible, almost as bad as at the Western Food Hub on Port Road. Victory Church (Life Adelaide) at Salisbury Free BBQ in Pittman Park on Commercial Road, Salisbury. 12:00 noon to 1:00pm Fridays. Sausages, onions, fried eggs, sauce on bread, water, occasional noodles, vegetarian option. Large Christmas hampers last year for regular clients. Generous and friendly church people. Safe venue. No I.D. or registration required. No seating except on fence. Also, free breakfast 9:30 to 11:00am last Saturday of month and they’re planning Thursday evening meals in a hall. 24 May 2022 Rama Rama Krishna free food
The Monday evening vegetarian curry and rice is always hot at Hurtle Square because the Krishna’s transport it in plastic insulated tubs. They served the food from the edge of the footpath on Pulteney Street clogged with Chinese electric rental scooters. I moved towards their van to read their advertising for their Kilburn banquets. Two Krishna Consciousness operatives looked back nervously and one of them locked the doors. This made me look at them more intently. Gone are most of the shaven headed white devotees. They’ve been replaced by Indians with plenty of skull hair. This is a similar phenomenon seen in most Indian-based devotional groups where the white locals founded the organisations that were then were taken over from India. Anyway, the curry with tofu was terrific. As good as in a restaurant. They also served cordial and a dessert. Krishna Consciousness Hurtle Square, Adelaide. Near the bus shelter on Pulteney Street. Outdoor food van. 6:00 to 6:30pm Monday and Friday. Sentient. They no longer hit troublesome clients with iron bars. Quality free vegetarian food served on plates. Eat standing up in the park or you can take it with you. Free. Nice. Indians go there pretending to be underclass. No strings attached: they don’t require I.D. or registration or payment. 24 May 2022 (above) Port Adelaide Enfield Council expelled 20 campers from the Western Reserve on the corner of Church Street and Bower Road at Port Adelaide. However, the Council appears reluctant or unable to confiscate tents or prosecute campers on the grass behind this carpark so the area is open for camping. (Adelaide Homeless Journal, May 2022.)
(above) Port Adelaide Enfield Council told homeless campers to leave due to "work" being carried out of the reserve. Everyone left except one fragile old man who remained while holes were dug for soil testing. The workers finished their job and all is back to normal. (Adelaide Homeless Journal, May 2022.)
Orange Sky misses third week in a row at SemaphoreThe man camping out at Kilkenny wasn’t amused. He’d arrived by bus with his bag of dirty clothing then discovered no Orange Sky Laundry van for a third Sunday in a row. The worst part is no explanation for their absence.
He said he liked to be clean and showered every day despite the problem of finding showers for homeless people. He disliked the Hutt Street Centre due to the long queues for the shower and seven-minute timer. Baptist WestCare was better as only fifteen people entered at 9:00am opening time and there are three showers for men and one for women. But he said the breakfasts weren’t as good as Hutt Street Centre, but you didn’t need to sign up as a client to get the meals at WestCare. "Breakfast not worth it unless you are hungry," he said. At least Fred’s Van turned up at the Semaphore hall, but it was takeaway only as they had only three volunteers. But what little difference did that make? One client said even when we ate inside it was too rushed and staff treated us like we were mentally retarded. This client said volunteers should reconsider their involvement if they weren’t willing to do a decent job. But when it comes down to it, they are there while all those highly paid homeless industry counsellors and data collectors do nothing for us. There wasn’t any hot vegetarian option so I got sandwiches from which I removed the meat. No coffee, but the pastries, pies and bread from Semaphore Bakehouse were freshly baked that morning. This is the most generous bakery in Adelaide. I gave the sugary buns to David Hobbs from Rudd’s. His sister won’t come to Fred’s Van on Sundays for fear of the violence and threatening talk. David Swan was there earlier looking for cigarette butts from which he built one smoke. He said tobacco was the only thing that soothed him. The man from the Port Adelaide backpackers’ joint got his car back after letting a homeless man sleep in it. He found it opposite the police station. Fred’s Van Semaphore St Bede’s Anglican Church Hall (near Semaphore Road), 200 Military Road, Semaphore. No I.D. or registration required. 6:00 pm Sunday. Free. Sit down meal in the main hall. Good days and bad days. Too rushed. Slightly rough and dangerous customers. Clean toilets. Mirrors. Lots of room. Some rude stuff. Rare tipping over of tables and fighting, but usually calm. Free Orange Sky Laundry from about 4:30pm. Kindly and effective staff without a single lunatic amongst them. 23 May 2022 Discussion at table four
There were six of us at Table 4 at a popular free community meal near Port Adelaide. Discussion began of housing problems when I told them I was living in a tent on the Western Reserve near the Chinese-owned shopping centre at Port Adelaide. A man in his thirties said he lived in a house with thirteen relatives after leaving a private tenancy. He said a man had pushed himself into his unit then sat on the couch and demanded his keys saying someone was chasing him. He wouldn’t leave. That was the final straw for the tenant and he moved his disabled wife and children back to her parents’ house. There is one combined toilet and bathroom for all fourteen of them so he shaves in public toilets, but has since been followed around by some “weirdo”. Another man said he was leaving Adelaide and his welfare rental unit as locals had thrown rocks through his windows and spread rumours about him. He said they didn’t like people who kept to themselves. He’s going to retain his tenancy while living outside Adelaide for a period of time. A woman living in a Housing Trust unit said one neighbour demanded coffee every three days and when she finally refused, the neighbour shouted at her on the street. The neighbour on the other side is a schizophrenic drug addict and screams that she throws dead baby bodies onto her roof. An older woman in a Housing Trust unit said she’s had drug addicts living next door for ten years who had initially ruined her life, but she’s learnt to live with it. All four are unable to get a transfer to welfare housing and according to one tenant, when she enquired about a transfer she was told by a Housing Trust employee, “Were you born in Australia? Do you speak English?” She answered yes to both questions and was told cheap rental housing was available only to refugees. This sounds an apocryphal tale, but is common amongst those looking for cheap government rental properties. And I have seen this at an Elizabeth retirement complex being demolished and tenants transferred elsewhere. This process took two years and caused anguish for the tenants some who were in their 80’s and 90’s. After everyone was transferred except me, Anglicare brought in a dozen individual and groups of refugees. They were all placed in permanent welfare housing within three months with the average waiting time of four weeks. What made the powers behind the government turn on its own people? 23 May 2022 Catholics outsmart Rohan Feegrade and the LutheransThe Catholics outsmarted Rohan Feegrade and his band of Lutherans and Salvation Army officers?
They lobbied the new Labor government to return much of lost funding to the Hutt Street Centre, St Vincent de Paul Night Shelter and Catherine House lost last year in a minor coup by the Towards Home Alliance led by the Salvos and Lutherans. But the new Labor government in South Australia has increased funding for the Catholic organisations. Along with this victory, former St Vincent de Paul Chief Executive, Louise Miller-Frost has won the federal seat of Boothby in another coup so she’ll be pushing money back to the Catholics. Not that any of this is relevant to those living outside as the bureaucrats in the homeless industry soak up 95% of funding, most of which comes from the government. Late 22 May 2022 Remembering Jackie
From the anonymous contact page Who remembers Jackie? Spent six years in south parklands back in the day? Called herself angel. Would take her shirt of her own back to use as a tornaque on the rapist she just bit thier penis off. Had a big temper and a big heart. Turned her pay over to feed homeless and go without food so they wouldn't. She's alive and well, calmed down a bit, but her heart still strong. Pumped full of pysch drugs and body broken, but she manages. Her soul still there and shining. Abused badly as a child, working Streets at 15. In her 50s now, knows just how evil system is, shes lived it. Got her redress payment in Adelaide and shouted every homeless person she could. Banned from casinos coz she can count cards. A great Aussie battler.. Hoff Late 22 May 2022 From the anonymous contact page
Thank you for your generosity and sharing your knowledge of Adelaide. I am from Whyalla and found your details from the Salvos welfare department at Elizabeth. When I am in a better position I would love to donate some money your way so you can keep your website running. Like many others I am sleeping in my car but you have helped me locate not only free local tucker but helpful things like showers. God bless you and to anyone reading this and also doing it tough. There is not a lot of help out there for us men but your resources have saved me time, petrol and some of the dignity I have left. Stay safe. Anonymous Editor: No financial supported needed, but thanks the same. But information about your experiences in each place you visited would be priceless. Thanks for your encouragement. The free and excellent soup isn’t hot enough at the Adelaide Day Centre soup van in Hurtle Square six nights a week except Saturday from 6:30pm then at 7:00pm at Whitmore Square. They should bring it to the boil before heading out or deliver it in preheated insulated containers. * Carmel from Chat and Chew has been appointed to a position with Jigsaw that might involve living in Melbourne for three months. She previously worked as a volunteer kitchenhand, but that didn’t work out so she transferred to a bartending course. But having a short fuse made bartending problematic for her. She’ll get a taxi to her training position at Jigsaw or be escorted by her N.D.I.S. Carer. It isn’t clear what the Jigsaw job entails. Carmel described it as “paperwork”, but couldn’t elaborate. Whatever, the real winners will be the “trainers” and Care workers. * A homeless MyAgedCare client asked for a taller tent as Assistive Technology because his small tent makes it difficult to dress and undress. MyAgedCare said they’d supply can openers, disability cutlery, handrails and shower assisting equipment, but a tent was out of the question. The conclusion here is that disability services are cancelled for elderly homeless disabled people as requests for help are simply referred to homeless support programs that assume the client is insane, criminal or a drug addict or all three. * The new Orange Sky laundry van should reach Adelaide this fortnight. They’ve replaced the generator with lithium batteries and the electrical element driers with heat pump driers. Late 22 May 2022 Authorities and well-wishers relocate beach veteranThe man in his late fifties living on the beach says he served in three theatres of conflict with the Australian military. His name is Gerry. He showed and described to me his injuries from the conflicts. A beach walker named Bruce, also a veteran, confirmed his story.
The tent was on the edge of the dunes at Largs North. Veteran Gerry had been homeless for two years living on Henley Beach then the city where he was beaten and finally for the last three months at Largs North. His discipline was impeccable and his tent was immaculately clean despite all that sand. But his mind was agitated from the stress like when another man wearing only underwear ran up the beach during the night. He tried to grab our veteran’s blankets and grabbed a leg as well trying to pull both from the tent. Gerry grabbed back his blanket and described the night scene as a tug-o-war. The underwear man retreated and continued his run towards Outer Harbour. Gerry’s speech was wild and grand. He affected others so that a dozen people a day dropped off blankets and food. There was a fund to house him. He was ecstatic to see me. He said he’d been waiting months to meet another homeless person. Lauren James was due to meet him at the tent at 4:00pm on a day earlier this week. She’s from that well-funded homeless UnitingSA joint on Lipson Street near the Maritime Museum. Lauren didn’t turn up. Bruce turned up and later at 5:00pm a man named Shane from Sunnydale SRF plus a well-wishing woman who might have been part of the social media group advocating for our veteran. Shane said our veteran tent dweller could live at Sunnydale. I urged Gerry against it. A psychiatric place wasn’t appropriate just because he was homeless and agitated from the stress. But Shane said it would be Rest and Recreation and then he could make up his mind. Our veteran liked that. They came for him the next day, but instead of ending up of Sunnydale, he was put into a rooming house at Rosewater, a nearby suburb. Most of his tent contents were transported with him, but well-wishers still left more blankets and food. Then the tent was gone. With luck, our beach friend veteran will find peace in a safer environment. 21 May 2022 From the anonymous contact page

Cle ver Thanks for letting us tour "Homeless camp" We can sightsee the real Adelaide for free. 19 May 2022 Puddle Jumpers at Hurtle Square
“Ladies, this doesn’t need to happen,” a former security guard and now Puddle Jumpers worker said as two ladies snarled at each other in front of the free boxes of vegetables in Hurtle Square on Monday evening. A smooth-talking Aboriginal woman with her four-year-old daughter had told a white woman with her adult son or friend not to touch her daughter. The kid had been moving between the adults ahead of them. They snarled back and forth until the Aboriginal woman told the older white woman, “You’re scaring my daughter.” Another woman told the Tim Tam young woman serving prepared cold food: “Do you think I’d lie over that?” The hairy man had jumped to the front of the queue after being at the end with me. He’d thrown his soup cup and spoon onto the road then strode to the front. No big deal. He’s okay, but not always self-aware. But some people take exception to queue jumpers as they reduce discipline within the group. The woman had complained, but volunteers weren’t interested and expressed doubt about the woman’s complaint. Nearly 45 people lined up for the free bread, vegetables, fruit, takeaway meals from the Western Food Hub, Tim Tams and bottled water. It was hard to believe this arm of Puddle Jumpers using the Variety Sunshine bus was part of the same mob who operate the Western Food Hub. The Hub staff at Hindmarsh include a number of extremely negative volunteers whereas this outreach on Monday evenings was so positive and forgiving. Puddle Jumpers Hurtle Square Free fruit, vegetables, hot food 7:00-8:00pm Hurtle Square, Adelaide on Mondays. No I.D. or registration required. No questions asked. Similar to Adelaide Day Centre soup van and Fred’s Vans. Puddle Jumpers is one of the best new participants in the free food scene and they don’t subscribe to the Eternal Shame File. They have 750 volunteers and zero paid staff. 19 May 2022 (above) Adelaide is an elongated city with a long coastline where perhaps two hundred homeless people camp in tents, within tourism infrastructure and in their vehicles. Social workers play no role in their lives except to siphon off money that could be used to build houses. (Adelaide Homeless Journal, May 2022.)
Blackie posing as homeless
A homeless man begging at the St Clair shopping centre is in competition with another man known as “Blackie” purportedly either owning or at least living in a house. Blackie was heard phoning for a taxi to take him to a brothel according to an employee in Coles at St Clair. Blackie has also been accused by the homeless man of installing an accomplice near the homeless man to attract donations away from him. This is the nature of begging in Adelaide. It’s a highly competitive profession where beggars are rarely desperate homeless people, but skilled tricksters. 17 May 2022 Orange Sky Laundry collapses
Orange Sky cancelled half its free laundry service to homeless people over the past ten days. Orange Sky management hasn’t disclosed the reasons, but there is a problem with the generator on the laundry van. Orange Sky management should restructure its services as promising to be at a certain location then cancelling is a miserable experience for homeless people. That’s why most homeless people avoid the orange van. It’s useless. Those being able to access the North Adelaide laundromat can get a code from Orange Sky head office allowing them to use the machines without charge. However, there has been some problems with the codes working properly. Their number is (07) 3067 5800. Tell them you’re homeless. 17 May 2022 Interesting times at Elizabeth

After getting let in by the best worker (Allison I think her name is) this woman watches you take a tiny bag from the elderly women and then take some bread and if you take to long she asks you to leave. “At Parafield [Salvation Army] last week, I had heard that they give away Woolies bread. When I asked about if they was bringing back Friday night dinners. I was a bit dissapointed when a short angry looking woman told me in a very serious tone they weren't. I liked the fat guy and his wife that was there at least they would talk to you and give you the time of day not the reception I copped. “I was at Ingle Farm Shopping Centre and I saw that dude from Unley Salvos who always looked prim and propper. Please supply more of your insights and experiences. 16 May 2022 Soup van volunteers don’t even know their opening daysTwo volunteers at the Adelaide Day Centre soup van insisted they were open every evening except Sunday when for years they’ve been open every evening in the cooler months except Saturday. Adelaide Day Centre confirmed the next day it was Saturday they were absent and not Sunday.
Meanwhile, last Monday Ned the Croatian genealogist arrived saying his system of winning at gambling was paying off and he’d doubled his money from $3 to $6. “Enough to buy a cup of coffee,” he said. He planned to return to the Casino and play double or nothing three more times with the hope of getting $48. The “no electricity” man was going there as well, but only for the warmth and lights. He planned to get the last tram home at midnight that was free due to him being an Aged Pensioner. The soup wasn’t hot enough and was all vegetarian, no meat. I don’t eat meat, but those who do should be catered for since the Adelaide Day Centre is Catholic and they eat meat. Volunteers had plenty of blankets to give away. One man who got a sleeping bag said, “You don’t know how much this helps me. I appreciate it.” Another man with a woman also got blankets. That Russian client said the war in the Ukraine was a civil war and nothing more while the Ukrainian ahead of him in the queue said nothing. The man who no longer believes in washing was there. Adelaide Day Centre Soup Van Hurtle Square at 6:30pm and Whitmore Square at 7:00pm. Variety of quality soups and bread every evening except Saturdays. 1st Monday in May to early October. Free. No I.D. required. No questions asked. Sometimes blankets and beanies available. Less violent than Fred’s Van over on Gawler Place. Revolutionary theology activist Sister Janet Mead was co-founder in the 1980’s. 16 May 2022 Intrigue at St Bede’s
Anglicare is reducing its subsidy of the free Tuesday breakfast by half next year providing just $2500 for 50 weeks. St Bede’s is Anglican and Anglicare is a rogue financial and welfare entity that gained independence from the church in 2000. An ex-police officer reacted to the rumour that the Salvation Army was attempting to take over the St Bede’s breakfast saying she’d boycott the place if that happened. Meanwhile, Major Tim Watson from the Army was at the next table smiling and talking with staff and diners, but not me. Near the back of the hall, a preacher from the Exeter Uniting Church was strangely glad-handing diners perhaps trying to gain a foothold or simply observe a successful operation. The atmosphere was quieter than usual as the loudest man in the room had gone mute after damaging his voice box while shouting at a football game. And Sister Ruth was absent and had tendered her resignation letter to take up the position of Principal at an Anglican Theological school. But the head of the breakfast committee said she wouldn’t let others take over the operation and that Pauline in the kitchen was a strong woman and together everything would remain as it was. St Bede’s Semaphore Free Breakfast 200 Military Road, Semaphore (near Semaphore Road). Tuesdays 8:30am to 10:00pm. Free good breakfast with yoghourt, bacon or sausages, fruit, toast, ham and tomato, toasties, fried eggs. No I.D. or registration required. Professional staff. Toilets. Mirrors. Free fruit, vegetables and fresh bread to take away. Harsh virus regulations have been removed though staff wear face masks. Free clothing. Water tap outside that requires special handle from Bunnings. 16 May 2022 On the Street
The Acting Verger at the Exeter Uniting Church regained some of his voice. He’s the man you hear in crowds with his enthusiastic loud conversations. But in this case, he was shouting at his television. He can now speak in a whisper, but still carries a little notebook to communicate with others. But when he speaks in whispers to others, they use the same volume replying, which he can’t hear as he needs hearing aids. * Kerrie, the mother Nathan and the fiancé of Shaun who broke his brain with alcohol, couldn’t get an ambulance the Sunday before last. She waited hours then went to St Bede’s Fred’s Van after telling them of her movement. But the ambulance call centre person said they don’t do changing addresses so bad luck. Last night at Fred’s Van at Semaphore, she had a hypo and nearly lost consciousness, but for Nathan, carrying a bottle of sugary drink. This perked her up somewhat, but she remained pale and quiet. * A homeless volunteer at a Prospect soup kitchen said he cares about others as a volunteer worker, but no one cares about him, anymore. He seemed a little sad. * Two women clients at a soup kitchen are planning to bring inside the old homeless man dying from cancer. One said he can stay at her place. The old man said Unity Housing had rented a flat to him three years ago so he wouldn’t die on the street, but later changed their mind and kicked him out for “hoarding” or maybe something else. The old man had planned to die in Darwin, but his condition is deteriorating and he might not make it. * A volunteer at the Puddle Jumpers Western Food Hub told two clients they were unintelligent for sitting in chairs that made it difficult for him to bring in supplies from the truck. One client replied saying the volunteer had sh** for brains. The volunteer said next time he was serving food, he wouldn’t serve that client. Upon hearing this story, another client said he’d remove Puddle Jumpers from his will. 16 May 2022 Why the huge drop
