Free Adelaide homeless Scene Christmas 2016 Events
This is a tiny sample of free Christmas events for street people. Some welfare joints keep their free Christmas events secret to reserve them for regular clients. The Christmas abundance is followed by the January drought when many homeless services shut down for the holidays.
COS We Care Their free Christmas party is at 7:30am to 9:00am on Sunday 25 December 2016 in the South Parklands across the road from the Theosophical Society and near the corner of Hutt Street and South Terrace. No pre-registration required. Their Elizabeth free Christmas party will be on Saturday 24 December 2016 at Carpark No 1, Fremont Park, York Town Road, Elizabeth (near Main North Road). No registration required. St Luke’s Church Whitmore Square Sunday 25 December 2016. Entry about 11:30am until at least 2:00pm. Free lunch with a huge variety of meats, fresh salads, junk food and drinks. Lots of presents for children and greedy adults. Very crowded with perhaps 400 guests. A real mad house. No pre-registration or identification required. Just walk in. Everything free. St Luke’s is the church on the western side of Whitmore Square. Westcare Baptist Their free Christmas meal is held from about 12 noon on Sunday 25 December 2016. It is smaller and quieter than St Luke’s and, according to some street people, superior. No registration required. The WestCare dining room is at the end of Millers Court (off 212 Wright Street near Whitmore Square), Adelaide Pilgrim Church Hall The Angels of Adelaide produce the free Pilgrim Christmas gathering that begins about 4:30pm on Sunday 25 December 2016. There is free hairdressing, gift bags and an excellent meal. The Pilgrim Church is at 12 Flinders Street, Adelaide (near King William St and Victoria Square). Entry to the church hall is from the back of the church. Hutt Street Centre Sunday 25 December 2016. Usual 7:00am entry for homeless clients. Coffee and Christmas snacks until about 11:00am when an early lunch of roast beef and vegetables is served followed by a gift for each guest. Best to get there about 9:30am. No pre-registration or identification required. Just walk in. Everything free. The atmosphere is very nice and much gentler than St Luke’s. The Hutt Street Centre is at 258 Hutt Street, Adelaide near South Terrace. Mary Magdalene on Moore St, Adelaide Their free special end of year meal is on the 17th of December 2016 at 6:00pm after which they close up until late January or early February. The Christmas meal includes gifts and decorations placed on the tables with extra foods and the number of guests is higher than usual. The atmosphere is always good there. No registration required. Magdalene Church Hall Moore Street, Adelaide (entrance through the laneway between the hall and the Saracen Head hotel). Drunks and drug affected people welcome, but you must sit on the chairs in the laneway, which is the best place, anyway. Pilgrim Lounge Christmas Party Wednesday 14 December 12noon to 1:30pm. “Open to all those who regularly visit our Lounge area. Please let one of our Lounge volunteers know if you will be attending.” Pilgrim Lounge (entry from back of Church) 12 Flinders Street, Adelaide (near King William Street and Victoria Square) Open Monday to Friday 10:00am to 2:00pm. Anglicare Elizabeth Mission 91-93 Elizabeth Way, Elizabeth (near the shopping centre and police station) ph 8209 5400 Salvation Army Unley The Unley corps hold an excellent free Christmas day gathering in Mary Street, Unley. Do Unto Others will continue throughout the holiday period including Christmas eve and New Year’s eve. Everything always free. Whatever criticism has been directed to the Salvo’s, they stick with the homeless crowd and do not shut up shop during the Christmas period and January.
